The irony of the world
The world is a good place to be, only if it could have been a perfect place. Ironically, the world is flawed and inauspicious, as demonstrated by Niels' dreams and aspirations. Niels is buoyant that his dreams are possible, and he goes a step ahead to invest everything in them. Regrettably, Niels' ambitions and aspirations only turn out to be desolated expectations and just nightmares due to the fickle nature of humanity.
The irony of love
After building a beautiful mansion for himself in Canada, Niels wants to find a beautiful wife to build a beautiful family. The reader realizes that Niels is a man of vision and ambitions. Ironically, Niels forgets to remember that he is a member of the imperfect world where dreams turn into nightmares. When Niels approaches Ellen, the woman of his dreams, he is disappointed to learn that she is not interested in marriage! Niels ends up going to town to find any woman who can qualify to be wife material.
Clara’s opportunism
When Niels realizes that his heart belongs to Ellen despite being married, he does not consider divorce as an option. Instead, he moves out of his house to live with his friend. Ironically, Clara turns Niels' dream house into a brothel where she invites night guests to generate a fortune. Consequently, Clara's aim of seducing Niels to marry her was to attain financial benefits.
Niels’ release from jail
The reader finds it satirical that Niels is released from jail after six years because he has a good reputation and exemplary behavior. Remember, Niels was jailed because he killed his wife, and there is no justification that he had good behavior when it comes to his release from jail.
The Satire of Ellen's marriage to Niels
When Niels is jailed for killing his wife, Clare, Ellen joins her hands with Bobby and Mrs. Lund to ensure that Niels' property is safe. After six years, Niels is released, and he asks Ellen's hand for marriage. This time around, Ellen agrees to marry Niels and have children with him. Ironically, Ellen had rejected Niels' marriage proposal because she promised herself never to get married.
