Human Desire that Leads to Misery as Portrayed in H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains" Anonymous 12th Grade

H.P. Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness tells the story of the strange discovery of a gruesome expedition by a group of explorers who traveled to Antarctica in September 1930. This expedition was divided into two groups, namely the group led by the narrator in the story, Dr. William Dyler, and the entourage led by Professor Lake. During the expedition, they found a variety of gripping oddities. Not only because of the storms and weather that hindered their expedition, but also strange discoveries that the human mind cannot comprehend. Despite realizing that there is a risk of death to dig deeper into their discovery, they are still tempted by the unknown. This novella describes how human curiosity can drive them to do something dangerous and even threaten their own life and the lives of others.

Dyer in “At The Mountain of Madness” said, “We might have known from the first that human curiosity is undying.” This shows that human desires will be able to stop only when they have found the answer to what they want to know.
