Sci-Fi (Tracy K. Smith poem) Quotes

Quotes

"There will be no edges, but curves."

"Sci-Fi", Line 1

The opening line of the poem creates an immediate contrast between the current, harsh reality and the softer, smother possibility of the future. These two words “edge” and “curve” have an onomatopoeic quality to them, for the sound of them spoken expresses that which they stand for.

What’s also interesting from the very start, is the tone of certainty in this optimistic, softer future that the verb “will” implies. The speaker of the poem is convinced of the certainty of the future as they shape it in their head.

"Women will still be women, but…"

"Sci-Fi", Line 7

With this simple line, the hardships that the women of the present are faced with are implied, such as inequality, discrimination, and underestimation. What the speaker of the poem is saying, is that women will be women in the physical sense only, but the societal gender divide, which makes it difficult for them to navigate the present world, will be meaningless.

"For kicks, we’ll dance for ourselves"

"Sci-Fi", Line 11

In this optimistic vision of the fictional future world, the speaker of the poem predicts with this line that joy for the sake of joy will be normalcy.

This implies that the current world is way too strict and serious, and dancing in front of a mirror, solely for ourselves, is not something that is looked upon with approval.
