Sarah Starzynski
Sarah Starzynski is one of the two main characters in Sarah's Key. The first time we meet her in the book is when she is a ten-year-girl in Paris under World War II. She locked her brother, Michel, in a cupboard, and the whole story follows her pursuit of saving him. She comes too late, and in the end, after she has lived her life, married and has a son, she commits suicide, not managing to deal with the pain of her past.
Julia Jarmond
Juila Jarmond is one of the main characters in Sarah's key. We follow her life and the life of the people around her from her perspective throughout the book. The reader learns about the personal problems Sarah has, such as miscarriage as well as when she researches Sarah and finds out about her life. She also stands and ponders buying the apartment that belonged to Sarah and her family. She also comes in contact with Sarah's son, William.
Michel Starzynski
Michel Starzynski is Sarah's brother. He only lived to be four years old, because he was locked in a hidden cupboard by his sister, where he died as she never managed to go back. Michel's story is the center of the tale, because Sarah tried to reach him throughout the story.
William Rainsferd
William Reinsferd is Sarah's son. He initially doesn't want to learn anything of his mother but changes his mind towards the ending of the book. William also becomes a close friend with Julia as she moves to New York and begins a new life with her new-born daughter.
