Themes and Symbols

Objective:

Students will examine different themes and symbols present in the story and will create a storyboard to visualize them

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.2

Structure:

Lead the class in a brief discussion of what themes and symbols are. Have the class come up with a definition for each, along with providing a few examples from popular media or other stories read in class.

Theme: The central idea, message, or lesson present in a given work. Common themes include love, death, and good vs. evil, though themes can be more nuanced and sophisticated than these. Have the students offer an example or two of...
