Ruth Fainlight: Poetry Characters

Ruth Fainlight: Poetry Character List

Narrator, “Handbag”

The narrator of this poem is describing the contents of her mother’s handbag. She explains that the contents of a handbag—particularly those of older women—are precious, as handbags are something that we carry with us always. The narrator explains that her mother kept a worn and folded image of her deceased father in her handbag, so that he will always be close to her. The narrator is commenting on the fact that this picture provides her mother a sense of comfort because it draws upon many warm and positive memories of when her father was still alive. Though the narrator does not describe herself in this poem, it can be assumed that the narrator is female, for she is representative of author Ruth Fainlight.

Narrator’s Mother, “Handbag”

The subject of this poem is the narrator’s elderly mother. Though not much is known about this woman, the narrator describes the contents of her handbag, for the things this woman carries in her handbag are clearly of significant importance to her. This woman exemplifies the human spirit and our tendency to hold onto those things that we treasure and/or miss. The woman carries a picture of her deceased husband to serve as a permanent reminder of their love.

Narrator, “Crocuses”

The narrator of this poem appears to be reflecting upon the tragedies of the world. Though it is not specified if the narrator is a male or female, it can be assumed the narrator embodies author Ruth Fainlight’s own conscious. In this way, it can be concluded that the narrator is a female. She is looking at the crocuses that are blooming and she notices their purple color. This color then reminds her of the bruises that rise on the skin of abuse victims who are kidnapped and forced into slavery or trafficking. In this way, the narrator represents the tendency that humans have to find tragedy in the simplest of objects, such as a blooming flower.

Narrator, “Ageing”

The narrator of this poem—presumably Ruth Fainlight herself—reflects upon her own aging process. She reflects upon all the events that she can no longer do, such as roller skating down the street, and reflects upon this transitionary period. She also explores the new aspects of her life that have taken precedence, such as admiring the younger generation and smiling at babies. In this way, the narrator of this poem represents the reflection period that occurs when humans realize that they are aging and getting older.
