Carla
Carl is a young woman coming from a wealthy family. When Carla expresses her interest that she wants to get married to Carla, her parents oppose the move because they want her to finish her studies and develop her career before getting married. However, Carla is madly in love with Clark and decides to elope with him without her parents' consent.
After Carla marries Clark, she discovers he is not a loving and caring man. Clark is a careless man who does not have any concrete plan for their future. In addition, Clark physically abuses Carla. Carla suffers in silence because she does not dare to face her parents and tell them about the evils of Clark. One day, Carla visits their neighbor, Jamieson and tells her about her suffering. Jamieson advises Carla to run away from her marriage. However, the escape fails because Carla still loves Clark despite his brutality.
Clark
Clark is Carla's husband. The only thing Clark shares with Carla is his love for horses. Clark is a school dropout, and he has no permanent career. Carla regrets getting married to Clark because he is careless and abusive. In addition, Clark is immoral because he extorts money from people close to him.
Sylvia Jamieson
Sylvia is a middle-aged woman who teaches Botany at a local University. Sylvia is a widow, and she does not have a biological child. Carla and Sylvia are good friends because they keep each other company. When Carla opens up about her suffering in her marriage, Sylvia becomes sympathetic and decides to help her run away to Toronto. However, the plan fails to succeed, and Clark discovers the plan. Clark starts threatening Sylvia and demands money from her. Clark accuses Sylvia of interfering with his marriage by inciting Carla to run away.
Leon Jamieson
Leon is Sylvia’s husband. By profession, Leon was a successful poet. Before his death, Leon had accumulated a lot of wealth. Sylvia inherited the expansive estate, but she continued to do her teaching job at the university.
Ruth Stiles
Ruth is a very close friend of Sylvia, living in Toronto, Canada. When Sylvia learns of Carla's suffering, she organizes with Ruth to accommodate Carla for some time before she finds a place.
