Rules of Civility Summary

Katey Kontent and Eve Ross are young women who go to the nightclub called The Hotspot in Greenwich Village on New Year’s Eve in 1937. Eve hails from a well-off background but has refused to depend on the family’s financial aid. As a result, she goes to New York where she meets and befriends Katey. The two young women are living together and during the last night of 1937 Eve takes Katey to a nightclub to celebrate as the usher in the New Year. The girls are thrilled by the jazz quartet playing entertaining music in the bar.

Tinker Grey gets into the club while Katey and Eve are enjoying themselves. Eve is interested in Tinker although the young handsome man seems fascinated by Katey’s beauty. The three get to interact and realize that they have more in common. However, their relationship is changed for life when they get an accident and Eve gets injured. Tinker has no option but to look after Eve. During this time, Katey and Tinker drift apart. The relationship between Eve and Tinker ends when she turns down his proposal. Besides, Eve relocates to Los Angeles and never comes to visit her friends in New York.

The absence of Eve makes Tinker start making moves on Katey. Surprisingly, Katey is elusive and seems interested in reading books. Katey learns that every person deserves respect irrespective of social status. The young woman and Tinker try to live by the rules of civility but in vain. Through interacting with wealthy friends, Katey manages to elevate her social status and becomes one of the successful young women in New York. Life depends on the kind of friends one chooses.
