“Poem of Disconnected Parts”
“Poem of Disconnected Parts” reveals the ubiquity of discrepancies. For example, Robert Pinsky writes, “In Argentina the torturers demanded the prisoners /Address them always as “Professor.” The title ‘professor’ is incongruous with the disposition of persecution. Perhaps, the torturers were enthused by egoistical desires when they claimed that title. Addressing them as ‘professors’ would make them prevailing and nonpareil. Also, Pinsky hints at the divergence between guilt and shame: “Many of my friends are moved by guilt, but I/ Am a creature of shame, I am ashamed to say.” Shame occasions mortification whereas guilt stimulates understanding. Additionally, the comic particularizes divergence when he declares, “I support the War, says the comic, it’s just the Troops/I’m against: can’t stand those Young People.” The comic’s assertion supposes that the troops can be detached from war , yet in reality they cannot. The troops are prime ingredients in the war; hence, their nonappearance would incontestably disqualify the war.
“Poem about People”
“Poem about People” endorses self-pity: “My rock radio sing my self-pity:/“The Angels Wished Him Dead”—all /The hideous, sudden stare of self.” These lines conjecture that people have the inclination to be unduly engrossed in their plights. The people focus more on their individual quandaries than the macro- level difficulties. Additionally, Pinsky sanctions uprightness and humaneness: “Young Jewish soldier nearly drowns/Trying to rescue the thrashing/Anti-semitic bully, swimming across /The river raked by nazi fire." The Jewish soldier dispenses a humane duty by liberating a bully who he would have left to perish in the fire considering that he torments the Jews. Had the soldier been deficient of honor, he would have disregarded the Jew for they belong to conflicting discourse clusters.Also,self-hatred in prevalent among humanity: “Hate my whole kind, but me, Love me for myself.” The speaker is narcissistic because he only arduous himself. Non-existent affection towards other humans results in intense self-centeredness.
