The novel follows the story of the Peyton family, who have newly arrived in the New World, in the early 1800's. They set up shop in Newfoundland, doing work in fishing and mining the abundant raw materials. As both their business and family grows, it is obvious that the native Red Indians are being pushed away from their homeland.
