    Common Threads and Word Webs

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Work

    Objective:

    Studnets will be able to identify common themes and motifs across an author's texts.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.4

    Structure:

    Break out into small groups so that you have between 5 and 7 groups. Assign each group a story in this section and ask them to discuss motifs and themes in that story.

    Ask one person in each group to act as a scribe, and to write down phrases and words that come up the most.

    Use a chalkboard, whiteboard, or smartboard for the next part of the activity. After the groups have worked for about 15 minutes, bring the full class...
