Right You Are (If You Think So) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Mrs. Ponza

Mrs. Ponza is a symbolic figure in the play. She doesn't come out until the very end, but she is the center of the entire play. She is seen as the only one who can uncover the truth and at the end when she enters the scene, cloaked and ethereal, she presents herself as an object of charity to help Ponza and Signora Frola realize their truth. Mrs. Ponza could be seen as a spiritual or religious symbol.

Subjectivity of reality

The entire play is about uncovering the truth, to make the reality clear. However, the truth is vague and reality subjective. Each of the accused characters believes in individualized truth, and they are both right in their own minds and in their own reality.

Laudisi

Laudisi is the voice of the author, a cynical character that is there to speak the author's mind and relay the author's message. He already knows the end, and he gives hints to other characters to bring the play to an end.
