Identity
In the beginning of the book, Chase has already solidified his reputation as the popular but scary leader of his high school. However, after the accident he no longer feels the same way and wants to change his perception to people. However, this proves harder to change than he expected as he keeps getting drawn in by his old friends.
Personal development
Throughout the book, Chase proves over and over again how a person can change should he or she be exposed to the right environment and be willing to make the necessary changes. Despite people reluctant in seeing the best in him, he manages to sway them over and prove that he has changed for the better.
Bullying
A central theme in this book is that of the consequences of being a bully. Chase caused much heartbreak and damage to many people’s lives, including that of Joel, who was forces to change schools because of the severity of the bullying. However, Chase redeems himself in the end when he protects his friends, and Brendan, against his ex-friends.
