"Red" is a short story that starts with the beautiful and romantic relationship with Sally. She is a native girl of a South Sea island. Red is the protagonist of the story. He is young and handsome, has charming physical characteristics, loves Sally as Adam loved Eve. Both love each other and want to stay together forever.

A tragic incident shattered their dreams of having a beautiful relationship in the future. Something other has been planned by destiny for their future life. Red was kidnapped by the Captain for his service, and he got separated from his lover Sally. The incident made Sally disturbed and helpless. She was unable to cope with her emotional state. She lived sadly and was captured under depression and loneliness, though she never dropped the hope of getting Red back in her life.

Neilson, another important character in the story, loves Sally. He wants to marry Sally, but she refuses. Sally is forced to get married to Neilson. Neilson tried a lot to win the heart of Sally, expected to have a beautiful relationship, but his efforts got faded. She could not forget Red and could not accept Neilson as her lover. It is the bone of contention in their married life. The story of his failed attempts is told by Neilson to a skipper who landed on the island. The skipper was identified as Red.

Red is introduced as a man of perfect physical bodily features like good looking and well-shaped body. He is tall and sturdy. He has beautiful hair and an attractive face. Sally, on the other hand, is also a beautiful example of physical attractiveness. She is a young, charming, and intelligent girl. She dreams of a loving and warm-hearted future. But, at the end of the story, both of them have lost their beautiful physical attributes within decades of struggle, depression, aloneness, and other negative emotions. Neither of them could recognize each other after 25 years in their old age.
