Set during World War II, Red Sky at Morning is a coming-of age-story. After his father volunteers to join the U.S Navy, Josh and his mother are relocated to New Mexico, where they struggle to adjust to their new life. Josh soon adapts, however, and integrates himself into the community, making lifelong friendships and relationships. He meets many people along the way, including amusing school friends and eccentric locals. His mother does not have the same experience and falls into depression and alcoholism due to homesickness and his father's absence.
Josh is the narrator of the novel and tells us the story of his incredible year living in New Mexico, and what he learned about love, life and loss. After his father dies in a mine accident, Josh decides to join the Navy himself in order to fulfill his duty to his father and his country. In this novel we see Josh growing up from a teenager to a mature adult, making this text a classic coming of age novel.
