Red Queen Irony

Red Queen Irony

Irony of the Coup

Mare risks her life and her family's by joining the Scarlet Guard and putting her efforts behind putting Maven on the throne. Ironically, he ends up being her enemy and is a traitor, causing all of her efforts to be pointless.

Irony of the Love Triangle

Mare finds herself falling in love with both Maven and Cal, meaning that she has two romantic options. However, since she enlists in the Scarlet Guard for Maven, isolating Cal, but then is betrayed by Maven, she ends up losing both of them.

Irony of Mare's Heritage

Mare has hated Silvers her entire life and is proud of her Red heritage. However, once she reveals her powers, she begins to benefit from that heritage, both in terms of wealth and position to powerful people. She becomes closer with privileged people and benefits from her privilege, in spite of the fact that she still resents Silvers.

Irony of Mare's Power

Mare was raised as a Red with no money or privilege. However, she ends up being more powerful than people who were raised as Silvers, countering the expectations of the Silvers around her.

Irony of the Class System

The Silvers pride themselves on being more important and powerful than the Reds, and use that power to hold themselves above the Reds, exploit them, and keep them in an oppressed position. However, Silvers are numerically in the minority, which means that they've set themselves up to be easily taken down by the more numerous Reds.
