Gender-based discrimination

The movie explores multiple cases of gender-based discrimination that Ginsburg fought against in the court room, including Frontiero v. Richardson (1973), which saw lieutenant Sharron Frontiero fight for the right to claim housing and medical benefits for her husband. Ginsburg also remarks that her husband, Martin, was essential in her fight again gender-based discrimination and that he would often help her prepare for her cases.

Women’s rights

The film focuses on varying aspects of Ginsburg’s role in enabling equal and fair opportunities for women by forcing a change in the laws at the time. Examples of ways that Ginsburg was essential to women even today, was through her work in making sure laws were in in place for housing, insurance, military service, abortion rights and ensuring that they were all equally accessible to women as they would be for men.

Legacy

The film also touches on Ginsburg’s impact on the present day. Ginsburg's granddaughter is present in the film and followed her footsteps by studying law at Harvard University, where she stated that whilst in Ginsburg’s time, there were only 9 women accepted amongst 500 male students, in the present day there was a 50/50 male/female graduating class for her. Clearly, Ginsburg has not only influenced her own family but has also been a force for change in institutions and the legal sector today.
