Ramona Quimby
Ramona Quimby, the protagonist of the book, is a lively young girl in third grade. The story begins with Ramona starting third grade in Cedarhurst Primary School, changing from her old school, Glenwood which gets turned into an Intermediate School. She gets excited about this change as she could go to school by herself in the school bus. Ramona is a clever, lively and creative child, whose antics may at times get a handful, though she is loving and sincere at heart. Being in the third grade, she considers herself mature enough to take care of herself. She expects accuracy in speech, about everything, both from herself and from others. Ramona and the various little issues she faces would be relatable to the young audience that it targets.
Beezus Quimby
Beatrice, or 'Beezus' as she is referred to, is the elder sister of Ramona. She is an eighth-grader starting at Rosemont Junior High School. She had been in her sister's old school, Glenwood School till then, and this change worries Ramona who feels anxious about the fact that she would no longer be around to help her out at school. A regular teenager, she gets rebellious at times, like over the dinner where her mother replaces meat with tongue, or over the sleepover that she wants to go to.
Howie Kemp
A boy from Ramona's neighborhood, he is one of her closest friends. He goes to the same School as her, and travels on the school bus with her, though he is in a different class. Ramona usually goes to his house after school, where she is supposed to be babysat by his grandmother.
Willy Jean Kemp
Willy Jean is Howie's four-year-old sister. She goes to Nursery School. Ramona tries to get along with her though she finds Willy Jean very trying, as she always gets blamed by Mrs. Kemp for whatever Willy Jean does because she's older and should have known better. She tries to get Ramona to play with her when she is at her house to be babysat, always giving her the worst parts in the game, like asking Ramona to be the dog to her Lady, and Mr. Rat, etc.
Mrs. Quimby
Mrs. Quimby is Beezus' and Ramona's mother. She works as a receptionist in a Doctor's Office. She is a very caring mother to her daughters, though she can be stern at times. When Ramona gets the Stomach-flu, she takes a leave to take care of her, risking her job in the process, in spite of their financial troubles.
Mr. Quimby
Mr. Quimby is Ramona's father. He had been working as a cashier in a supermarket, but being frustrated with the stress of the job, he goes back to college to get his teaching certificate to teach art. He is a good father and a loving and caring man. He supports Mrs. Quimby when she is stood up to by their daughters. He is often seen trying to sketch, in the story. He also works part-time in a Warehouse on a fork-lift truck, filling orders. He calls himself 'Santa's Little Helper' as the temperature in the Warehouse was way below zero degrees.
Danny
Danny, who is referred to as 'Yard Ape' throughout the story, is a boy in Ramona's class. Though he starts out by teasing her and stealing her pink eraser, they soon become friends. He calls her by names like Bigfoot, Egghead etc., which at times irritate and hurt Ramona, though he always intends it in a friendly, harmless way.
Mrs. Kemp
Mrs. Kemp is Howie's and Willy Jean's grandmother, who watches Ramona when she stays at the Kemps' house after school. She blames Ramona for Willy Jean does anything wrong, making Ramona hate the time she spends there every day after school.
