Radiance of Tomorrow Summary

Radiance of Tomorrow Summary

Radiance of Tomorrow is a story of a once peaceful and prosperous village of Imperi. However, the peace was disrupted when a civil war broke out and the village was attacked. Houses were burnt down and many people murdered, including women and children. Survivors were forced to flee and find refuge in other parts of the country.

Seven years have passed and villagers are gradually making their way back to Imperi. With no support from the government, the villagers start rebuilding the once flourishing Imperi. They are hungry and traumatized but determined to build a new start for themselves and their children. As more people make their way back, village elders start gathering children to tell them stories of their past and their traditions passing down their wisdom.

Life starts flowing into Imperi, even refugees join in rebuilding the village and ultimately become part of the community. A group of children soldiers, led by a man they call Colonel, also come to the village, but keep their distance by building camp on the outskirts of Imperi. Schools open and the two available teachers, Bockarie and Benjamin, work tirelessly to pass down whatever knowledge they have to the children.

However, the school principal is a greedy man. Instead of using the government fund to help the students, he pockets the money enriching himself. Benjamin confronts the principal and forces him to use the funds appropriately, he steals the school ledger and uses it as leverage. The principal gives in and starts allocation the government funds to the village families.

Apart from the school principal, another disruptive force has made its way into the village, a company of greedy white owners and investors start mining near the village. They dump their chemicals into the river that acts as the only source of water in the village. Crops are destroyed and people start getting sick. Most villagers are forced to work in the mines to provide for their families. A lot of villagers die in the mines because the company does not provide them with safety gear. The families of the deceased are compensated with a bag of rice.

After some years of mining, the company relocates leaving the village in a desolate manner. They build small and weak shanties for the villagers as reparation for mining in their land. The villagers are left rebuilding their village once again.
