“Not Nero, but God, rules the world”
Pomponia expressed here the idea of Christians – no matter how strong and omnipotent Nero was, he would never overcome God, who manages not only actions of people, but also their thoughts and plans. Nero was the Caesar, but came time, when he was dethroned and killed; he was the ruler of the huge empire, but he didn’t manage to protect his daughter from death. But God didn’t have any defeats: he kept all his promises, he helped everybody who prayed about it, who made impossible: people like Vinicius, inveterate warrior: cruel, heartless; Chilo Chilonides, corrupt and sneaky, radically changed and became true Christians.
“Without faith there can be no virtue”
It was strange to “hear” this phrase from such a callous man as D.A. But nevertheless, he said it sincerely, meaning that Rome will end if there is not faith in the people’s hearts. Only if people accept gods in their souls, they will become true people: kind, clement and beneficent. And only then society will have a hope for happy future.
