"Chameleon-like Devil Cats" (“Yellow Card Man”)

The devil cats are belligerent and copious. Seemingly, it would be problematic to do away with them, even though the procedure of engineering them was more straightforward and ambitious. The ‘chameleon-like forms’ allude to the manifold colors of the cats that was made possible through the artificial process. The multiple colors highlight the cats’ compound appearances that are inconsistent with the exteriors of natural cats.

“A Fat Clot of Invasive Species" (“Yellow Card Man”)

A fat clot” makes reference to the outsized number of refugees that had fled to Thai kingdom. Likening the refugees as ‘invasive species’ means that they were unwanted in Thai ; thus they are considered interlopers who must be uprooted before they grow throughout the kingdom.

Tiger Versus Wolf versus Mouse (“Yellow Card Man”)

A tiger signifies a dominant and powerful man. A little mouse depicts a defenseless and destitute individual. A wolf characterizes Ma’s well-made body.

Strawberries (“The Fluted Girl”)

The strawberries are metaphorical of Belari’s penchant for sweetness; the strawberries are predominant throughout the party.

Eyes of Belari's Rabbits (“The Fluted Girl”)

The eyes referred to in this simile are Stephen’s. Stephen’s soft eyes were an indicator that he adored Lidia, thus, he would never be disloyal to her. They were associates who valued each other.

Monster (“The Fluted Girl”)

Paolo Bacigalupi characterizes Burson as a monster based on his form and conducts. Bacigalupi writes, “ she stood, an unsteady pale fairy dwarfed by the looming monster that was Belari's head of security.” He intimidates Lidia through his petrifying appearance and antagonistic inclinations .

Devil (“The Fluted Girl”)

Vernon Weir is equated to a “Faustian devil.”He uses Belari’s body to enrich himself by making her believe that he is making her renowned.
