How does Euan's character development defy your expectations in this section? What do his motives appear to be?
Initially, Euan seems to be a sleazy, spoiled character whose only interest in Val is sexual. In this section, however, he shows himself to have surprising depth, friendliness, and selflessness. He appreciates Val's interest in literature, and good-naturedly chides her for assuming that "yuppies" like him cannot appreciate art. He also becomes Maud's legal representative simply out of interest in the case, not because he will gain anything.
