Describe Orwell's writing style. Why is this significant considering his subject matter?
Orwell's writing is very precise and clear, but it is not simple. His sentences are complex and his diction is highly sophisticated. His essay as a whole is very logical, linear, and structured. He introduces a thesis, elaborates on it, and backs up his claims with examples. Critics have noted (and Orwell himself admits later in the essay) that he does not always avoid the writing problems he is discussing—particularly passive sentences.
