Translation Activity
Kind of Activity:
Individual Writing
Objective:
Students will translate a key phrase from the text.
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2
Structure:
Make sure students have read “The Purloined Letter” before this activity.
Explain to students that by now, they have probably noticed that Poe uses non-English words in his stories sometimes. Seeing words in another language for works you have to read for school can bring up complicated feelings. Give students a moment to talk about how they feel when they encounter these non-English words. Allow students to discuss for about 10 minutes.
