Abigail Kirk lives in a fancy, modern apartment designed by her father, Weyland. After she was born, Abigail's father decides to leave her mother for a younger woman.
Abby frequently babysits her neighbor's children, with which she quickly becomes friends. The children engage in an odd game outside of the apartment building called "Beatie Bow", which is like tag, but the person who is "It" wears a sheet around themselves.
Abigail's mother tells her one day that she has begun seeing Weyland again. In fact, she wants the family to start living together, because she feels Abigail needs more order in her life. Abigail leaves in frustration, and chases a girl (one that watches the children playing Beatie Bow creepily from the street), and ends up (somehow) back in time.
The girl turns out to be Beatie Bow, and she came with Abigail to this strange new world. Beatie brings Abigail to her family, which develops a strange obsession with her. Robert ends up telling Abigail that she was part of the Bow family all along, and Abigail falls into tears.
