Philaster Imagery

The imagery of hearing

Dion is speaking to Thra and Cle about the meeting agenda that is about to take place in the King's palace. Both Cle and Thra listen as Dion answers their questions regarding the meeting. Dion says, “Faith, sir, the multitude, that seldom know anything but their own opinions, speak that they would have; but the prince, before his approach, receives so many confident messages from the state, that I think she resolved to be ruled.” Dion’s sentiments depict the sense of hearing to the reader.

The imagery of sight

The sense of sight is depicted to the reader when Meg says, “Peace if you love me: you shall see these gentlemen stand their ground and not court us.” Meg is alerting the men present to look at the ladies around but exercise a high discipline level and not court them. She tells men to stand on their ground and show that they have traveled the world and noted that women are not subjects of male chauvinism. Gal and La ask Megra what will happen if men around court them. Meg tells them that if men court them, it will be a clear indication that they are primitive and have an opportunity to travel.

The imagery of touch

Pharamond depicts the sense of touch to readers when he kisses the princess’ hand. Philaster is expressing this sense of gratitude to thank the King for trusting him with his beautiful daughter. He promises to take good care of her and fulfill his wishes. Pharamond tells the princess, “Kissing your white hand, mistress, I take leave to thank your royal father, and thus far to be my own free trumpet.”

The imagery of Pharamond

Pharamond’s response to the King depicts the sense of hearing to the reader. He mentions the sinew sound. Pharamond says, “Let me be swallowed quick, if I can find, in all the anatomy of yon man's virtues, one sinew sound enough to promise for him, he shall be a constable. By this Sun, he will ne'er make King, unless it is of trifles, in my poor judgment.”
