Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return Imagery

Imagery of Marjane’s departure for France

The resolution in “Persepolis 2” relates to Marjane’s departure for France. Her mother, father and grandmother see her off at Mehrabad Airport. Her mother tells her, “This time, you’re leaving for good. You are a free woman .The Iran of today is not for you. I forbid you to come back.” The mood at the airport is laid-back as they bid her farewell with composure, conscious that the separation is valuable. Marjane leaves Iran a knowledgeable woman unlike when she departed for Austria as an immature girl.

Imagery of Marjane’s life in the streets

Marjane explicates, “It’s incredible how quickly you can lose your dignity, I found myself smoking butts, looking for trash in cans, soon I was recognized and thrown out of all the trams, so I had to find a well-hidden place to sleep at night. Nights on the street could end very badly for a young girl like me.” Evidently, Marjane’s life on the street is tough since she is deficient, food, cash and shelter. Above all, she is open to multiple endangerments considering that she is a female. She is all by herself and not even Markus would be alarmed about her because he has by this time taken advantage of her outstandingly.

Imagery of Hair Dryer

Marjane writes, “Every morning, I was rudely awakened by the sound of Lucia’s hair dryer.” Seemingly, Lucia must dry her hair each morning; thus, the sound from the drier intrudes Marjane’s sleep. The sound is something that she must put up with Lucia’s morning trend because sharing rooms is inescapable in the boarding house.

The Imagery of Christmas

Marjane observes, “Friday, December 22, 1984, the streets were packed, the holiday frenzy had infected everyone.” The Christmas ambience is apparent in the embellished imagery, even though it is in black and white that takes over the streets during Christmas. The decorations amplify the Christmas euphoria.
