Alike
Alike is a 17 year old who is a lesbian, but must live trapped in her own home for fear of her mother's hatred of her for coming out as gay. She has never been intimate with another person and desires to do so. She has talent for writing and a desire to go deeper.
Laura
Laura is Alike's best friend. She is also a lesbian who lives with her sister and works in order help pay the bills while studying for her GED at night. She loves Alike and is highly protective of her.
Audrey
Audrey is Alike's mother. Her marriage with Arthur is strained and she despises the fact that Alike dresses like and boy and spends so much time with Laura. She does everything she can to get her daughter to be straight and won't accept her if she isn't.
Bina
Bina is a new friend introduced to Alike by her mother in order to get her away from Laura. However, Bina kisses Alike and they share an intimate night together before Bina rejects Alike, saying that she isn't gay.
Arthur
Arthur is Alike's father. They have a strong connection, but he is hardly around as he works nearly around the clock as a police detective. He does his best to stand up for his daughter and protect her, but knows he failed her when he didn't stop Audrey from striking Alike when Alike reveals her true sexuality.
