Other Desert Cities Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Memoir

Brooke has written a new book, a memoir about her brother's fall from grace, and how her parents played a major role in making him who he became. It is a symbol of her grief and pain at losing her brother and best friend.

Off the Wagon

Silda has gone off the wagon after five years of being sober. This is a symbol of her regret, guilt and shame at not answering Henry's plea for help years earlier when he called her to help him after the fire bombing.

Cold

Lyman goes to gather firewood to heat the home. He says the desert is so cold at night. This is a symbol for the coldness that has grown between him and his daughter, Brooke.

GOP

Lyman has climbed the ladder of political heights in the GOP, or Republican Party, and Polly has supported him along the way. This is a symbol to Brooke that they are more concerned with appeasing the Republican Party than caring for their family.
