    A Cluster of Neurons

    Kind of Activity:

    Individual Writing

    Objective:

    Students will be able to try to reconcile Crake's certainty that "God is a cluster of neurons" with the fact that the Crakers seem to develop a religion.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.9-10.8

    Structure:

    Crake insists to Jimmy that "God is a cluster of neurons," meaning that the reason for faith is neurologically ingrained in the human brain. He also maintains that he has eliminated this brain function in the Crakers. And yet, with Jimmy's input, they seem to be developing their own belief system.

    Present the following possible explanations to your class:
