Orientation: And Other Stories Metaphors and Similes

Everything for you (Metaphor)

Just like other office workers, these ones thrive on numerous gossips that circle around them. They know that Russel Nash is in love with Amanda Pierce, who just “tolerates” him and is not going to reciprocate his feelings. It is not a secret that Amanda is in love with Albert Bosch, who “only dimly registers Amanda Pierce’s existence,” for he adores Ellie Tapper, who hates Albert Bosch and “would walk through fire for Curtis Lance.” Although she would do anything for him, he just hates her.

Not almighty (Metaphor)

This office certainly has some strict rules. One’s break is considered to be “a privilege, not a right.” If one abuses “the break policy,” the managers are authorized “to rescind” one’s breaks. Lunch, however, “is a right, not a privilege.” If one abuses “the lunch policy,” the hands of the managers “will be tied” and they will be forced “to look the other way.” But they will definitely “not enjoy that.”

Fast (Metaphor)

Kevin Howard is “a serial killer, the one they call the Carpet Cutter, responsible for mutilation across town.” However, Kevin Howard does not let “any of this interfere with his work.” In fact, he is their “fastest typist.” The man types as if he “were on fire.” This is really enough for others to overlook his rather disgusting and troubling obsession with slaughtering innocent people.

Sharp (Simile)

Hector was surrounded by “empty tortilla-chip bags” that were “partial remains of yesterday’s dinner” which was “the last time he ate.” The growing feeling of hunger cut into his guts “like a razor.” Every passing minute felt like an agony. He needed to eat something to get rid of pain, loneliness and his own memories about life he used to have before he had become a giant.

Good morning (Simile)

Somoza woke up earlier than Dinorah, who was lying next to him. An alarm, “sharp and jangly” was crying angrily. Through eye slits, a vast room took shape in “chocolate dark.” Drapes “as thick as hides” covered ceiling-high windows. Morning light was bleeding in.

Flawless hue (Simile)

Somoza’s cook was “a tiny woman, a Guarani Indian of indeterminate age with jet-black hair, the hard palms of a tenant farmer, and skin as dark and smooth as burnished jatoba wood.” She wasn’t an exceptional beauty, but she was definitely charming in her own way.
