One L Analysis

One L: The Turbulent True Story of a First Year at Harvard Law School is an autobiography based on the life of and written by Scott Turow. The book was published in 1977 by Putnam.

The autobiography details Turow’s experience as a first year Harvard Law Student, known as ‘One L’s’. He goes onto discuss the intense workload and the great expectations placed on the students to become renowned alumni. The author discusses the teaching styles of different professors on his course, and how they shaped him to become the person he is today. He also goes on to discuss the personal problems he encountered with competitive individuals and bullies on his course.

The book was highly praised and loved by students and has become a perennial best-seller. The New York Times praised it for being "A wonderful book...it should be read by anyone who has ever contemplated going to law school. Or anyone who has ever worried about being human."
