Garbage Class
The metaphor of garbage class has been used for the children with special disabilities. The metaphor actually depicts how people with special needs are treated by the society. People treat them like trash, and they want to throw them in mental hospitals like they throw garbage. The mentally retarded people are treated worse than animals. Toray has depicted in her novel, that if we empathize with them, such abnormal people can do wonders and they often prove to be extra-ordinary like Sheila. She is also treated as garbage by her family and teachers, but Toray brings the best out of her student by being patient and empathetic.
Hostile eyes
The metaphor of hostile eyes has been used for Sheila. Toray says that behind the hostile eyes is a little girl who has made herself objectionable in order to save herself from further rejection. Sheila thinks of this world as something dangerous, so she tries to protect herself by being harsh and abrasive.
Pigeonhole
The metaphor of pigeonhole has been used for settling the abnormal students in special classes. Hayden teaches the mentally retarded children but her position comes in jeopardy when the school administration decides to push this program of educating abnormal children out of their school.
Home
The simile of home has been used for the classroom where abnormal children study. Toray tries to make the children feel comfortable as they are sitting in their own homes.
