Published in 2019, On the Come Up is a fictional teenage poverty novel that explores the life of an aspiring rapper who lives in a poor neighborhood and is perceived as a hoodlum by most of the people she knows. Her father, who was also a rapper, passed away suddenly, and she feels that it is her responsibility to do what he wasn't able to do.

Angie Thomas is a bestselling American writer that was born in 1988. Thomas grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. At just six years old, Thomas was horrified after seeing a shooting on the street. Her mother inspired her to take up writing after this event. Thomas' book The Hate U Give was her famous debut novel, and On the Come Up received positive reviews, remaining as an Amazon bestselling book for months after publication.
