Why does Howard dislike Monty Kipps? What tensions are at play?
Howard and Monty are professional rivals. Both study Rembrandt and Monty just published his book which is quite popular, whereas Howard’s book on the same topic is still unfinished and is not expected to be popular when it is finally done. Monty also called Howard out for Howard’s critique of Monty’s article where Howard confused two Rembrandt self-portraits. This caused Howard great embarrassment. Monty is also a popular right-wing personality and Howard deeply disagrees with his positions on race among others. Howard is also disdainful of Monty’s religiosity.
