Adulthood

Old Yeller tells the story of Travis as he comes of age, going from a young boy to a responsible adult. His father challenges him to be the man of the house when he leaves. After Travis' father leaves in search of better opportunities, he's suddenly thrown into adulthood and decides to take on the challenges that come with it.

As he goes through different phases of growing up, Travis learns how to navigate adult responsibilities. With each obstacle he faces, he learns to be better and more capable, as he grows into a full adult.

Courage and Strength

As Travis' father is leaving, after handing him his greatest challenge yet, Travis is in great fear as uncertainty grows in him. He however takes on the challenges courageously as he continuously overcomes his fear.

Travis goes from being a fragile boy to a man with immense strength to tackle any threat against his family. His struggles give him strength and no matter how hard things get, Travis never gives in and tackles things head-on.

The Bond between Man and Animal

The bond that Travis has with Old Yeller is essentially what gives him the drive to get through some of the worst periods in his life. As Travis is left to be the man of the house, Old Yeller becomes a great aid to the Coates' household. Utilizing his unmatched skills, Old Yeller provides Travis with a companion, hunting partner, and protector from danger.

They essentially protect one another as their lives become intertwined and inseparable. This book blurs the line between the world of man and animal and how immensely beneficial they are to one another on an emotional level.
