Old Times Imagery

Old Times Imagery

Opening

At the opening of the play, Pinter has Deeley and Kate come into view with the lights coming up while Anna remains in the dimness of the windowsill. The imagery sets up the characters Deeley and Kate's connection and how Anna is between them at the window, and thus represents being literally between the two characters.

Shine Bright

Pinter has the lights come up very bright at the end of the play with the characters sitting, slumped or lying down. The brightness of the lights represents the fact that these characters are creating a realistic moment, but that what is happening is not realism as the bright lights represents the moment being beyond reality.

Noise

Anna describes what it would be like for Kate to take a walk through the park as men jump out from shadows, traffic then disrupts the walks as she attempts to cross before being drawn into hotels where people are talking. The imagery describes how life exists outside of Kate's home, but the life rather than lifting Kate up brings her down to want to go back home.

Shy as a Fawn

Anna describes Kate as being as shy as a fawn when people would try to talk to her. They would be close to her but she would fold over in such a way to be far away from anyone who is close to her.
