Teachers should be sure to include information regarding Steinbeck's original intentions for the book (as a stage play, with the original title of Something That Happened. By being aware of such information, students can better evaluate the meaning of the text, as well as its final iteration as a novella.

Students will be able to draw upon their experiences of social inequality, whether with peers in school or in larger contexts. In addition, students can consider their own personal friendships and difficult conflicts that may have arisen.
