Structure:

Like Cather's family, the Bergsons were wooed to Nebraska by promises of land and opportunity to any person who worked hard. Between the time Mr. Bergson brought his family there and the time Alexandra sets up her homestead, the Divide had become a place that would be practically unrecognizable to the first settlers, but it was still a place of massive migration and land speculation.
