Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    In both writing and classroom discussion, students will cite textual evidence to support opinions on the meaning of the text, especially as social and political critiques of Nigeria and colonialism. Students should identify how the narrative elements support or interrogate an ideological point, keeping in mind that Chinua Achebe had strong convictions about Nigerian and global identity and politics.

    Students will gain an appreciation and greater understanding of the use of fiction to critique and satirize a culture, government, or individual.
