New Dark Age: Technology and the End of the Future Background

Published in 2018, New Dark Age is a novel examining the extent to which people have lost touch with reality due to the widespread introduction of technology. Bridle argues that most people believe knowledge of the world comes from a vast collection of ideas about it, which is available through technology. However, he says that this is not true. On an Internet that is crowded with fallacies, conspiracy theories, and the truth, it is often hard to discern what to believe. New Dark Age adds in the fact that the government has mass surveillance of these systems, which will inevitably lead to a massive problem in the future.

James Bridle is an English writer and artist that specializes in theories about the modern world. He is well known for coining the phrase "New Aesthetic", which refers to how we interact differently today because of technology. Bridle writes for The Atlantic and The Guardian, and in 2019 hosted a BBC radio broadcast.
