flint and steel

A piece of steel is struck against flint, a specific type of rock, in order to create a spark which can be used to make a larger fire.

whittling

Carving wood into specific shapes or features.

Ex. from the book: a fishhook

whippoorwill

A relatively small bird native to North America with great camouflage and a distinctive, loud call.

warbler

A small bird with a yellow chest that is native to both North and Central America.

dogtooth violets

A small, flowering plant that can be either yellow or a pale purple. Their bulbs are edible, as seen in the book.

Dehli

The small town near the part of the Catskills that Sam calls home.

Jack-in-the-pulpits

A three-leafed, striped plant with roots that can be eaten but only when cooked.

hemlocks

A large conifer tree from the pine family

owl pellet

A small bundle of regurgitated fur and bones that an owl cannot digest.

Bering Strait

A small section of the Northern Pacific Ocean where Alaska and Russia are within 120 miles of each other.
