Mae
The protagonist of the Mud, Mae is a spunky and sassy mid-twenties woman who has high hopes and big dreams. Although she has very little education and is illiterate, Mae leaps to action when her housemate Lloyd falls and does everything she can to find a diagnosis for his illness. She struggles, and against her better judgment, she invites another man named Henry into the home to try and help the situation. But this doesn't help and the three start to hate each other. Mae promptly leaves the home and uproots her life in general as a way for her to escape the toxic cycle she was in and as a way to become more successful.
Lloyd
Lloyd is also in his mid-twenties. Like Mae, Lloyd isn't especially well-educated. Lloyd is in love with Mae, but the feeling isn't reciprocated. Lloyd has poor personal hygiene, often smells, and had sex with a pig, three things which make Mae dislike him.
Henry
Henry is much older than Mae and Lloyd. Like Lloyd, Henry takes a liking to Mae and enjoys her company. He is portrayed as a wise and prideful but annoying man who likes to start fights. His presence - and his penchant for starting fights - causes the three house members to start to hate each other.
