Between the Lines
Kind of Activity:
Group Discussion
Objective:
Students will recognize and discuss places where the text says something other than what it means.
Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.1, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.6
Structure:
Ask students to break into small groups (3-5 students, depending on class size) and find at least two concrete quotes from this section in which a character's speech or inner monologue says something other than what the text really means. You can direct them to Peter's conversation with Clarissa and his later reflections on whether or not he is happy.
After students discuss, ask each group to provide an example....
