"Mold of the Earth" and Other Stories Characters

"Mold of the Earth" and Other Stories Character List

Botanist

At the beginning of the story, this personage seems like a simple scientist of botany. He just has a conversation with the narrator about mold, its way of existing and peculiarities. The botanist is a very calm and wise person who can think deeply and not ordinary. He likes to talk about splotches of molds, he sees them not only as dirt but as living beings with their rules and features. After one particular conversation, we realize that the botanist is not a mere botanist: he is like a God or a phantom being, who came to warn humanity, to show how rude and cruel people can be and how disastrous is their influence on the earth.

Narrator

The narrator of the story is supposed to be the author himself, though there are no names and the narration goes from the first person. He is an ordinary person. In depicting this character, the author tried to get to the readers’ mind and put there the ideas that people should be more attentive to environment, surroundings, to each other - that they must at least try to make this world better.
