Faith in God
Ms. Lonelyhears used to believe in God and that faith was genuine. Unfortunately for him, the longer he worked as an advice columnist, the weaker his faith became. That was a crisis of faith, the one that destroyed him, made him miserable and robbed him of possible happiness. The religion used to be a basis of his life, so when it was damaged, his whole life fell apart like a house of cards. No matter how much Ms. Lonelyhearts wanted to rekindle his faith, it felt wrong, insincere. That is a real tragedy of a person, no matter what is it either faith or any other idea.
A cry of despair and the society’s indifference
Ms. Lonelyhearts became a shoulder to cry on for many people. He received dozens of letters daily, each of them was filled with pleas if not for help than understanding. Out of sudden, the rich and prosperous America showed him its true face. There were unhappy families, rapists, murderers, madmen, bullying, lack of money, lack of love, absence of understanding and fear. Even a stronger person than Ms. Lonelyhearts would be unable to cope with such an impressive amount of suffering. He lent his ear to people who were sick and tired of the society’s indifference and drowned in that misery.
A marriage, expectations and disappointments
Before he became Ms. Lonelyhearts, he had the promising future. He was in love with a lovely girl whose kindness and gentleness were immeasurable, they were going to live happily for the rest of their lives, but then Ms. Lonelyhearts happened and everything collapsed. He learned that there were so many people like him and Betty, who were once in love and then started hating each other. All of that turned him into a cynic. He knew that life could destroy even the strongest, that even his kind-hearted fiancée couldn’t cure him.
