Miss Cynthie Imagery

Driving through New York-visual imagery

Miss Cynthie thoroughly enjoys the ride through New York, looking up at the buildings and parks. But what is more special to her is the fact that she is in David’s car that speeds along towards his home. It can be concluded that to Miss Cynthie that moment is a moment of pride, the knowledge that her grandson made something out of himself.

Visual imagery of Harlem

The moment Miss Cynthie arrives to Harlem, she is struck by the atmosphere. She sees African-American young boys and girls leisurely strolling through the streets. “Not just a change of complexion. A completely dissimilar atmosphere. Sidewalks teeming with leisurely strollers, at once strangely dark and bright.”

Auditory imagery of Miss Cynthie’s song

After discussing with his girlfriend when he will tell the truth about his job to his grandmother, David hears his grandmother sing her favorite song. The song she sings is called “Buffalo Girls”. “Miss Cynthie’s voice came quite distinctly to them, singing a jaunty little rhyme.”

A multitude of faces-visual imagery

Still unaware of what her grandson’s job actually is, Miss Cynthie was brought into a jazz place where she will unknowingly see him perform. She scans her surroundings and is surprised to see a multitude of different faces all brought together in that one place. “She looked out over the seated multitude, scanning row upon row of illumined faces, black faces, white faces, yellow, tan, brown: bald heads, bobbed heads, kinky and straight heads…”
