Is love presented positively or negatively in Metamorphoses?
A case can be made that in Metamorphoses, two faces of love and sexuality are presented. One seems to be intimately tied to violence and dominion, and which can lead to horrible abuse. Tereus's rape of Philomela embodies this variety. But there is also another kind of love, which uplifts and empowers those who feel it, especially if felt mutually. One thing is for sure: love is as multifaceted and mutable a thing as Metamorphoses itself.
