Messenger Irony

Messenger Irony

The Name "Seer"

The name of the blind man who takes care of Matty, Seer, seems to be ironic. However, he is able to see things with his heart that are hidden from others.

Matty's Punishment

Once Matty is banned from school as a punishment for being mischievous, his first reaction is to laugh at it. However, ironically, he quickly feels "woefully lost" when he hears the other children at school.

The Intention of the Villagers

While Village has been created out of selflessness, it is soon dominated by selfishness and greed. This is an example of situational irony, as intention and outcome are the opposite.

The Welcome Sign

There is a welcome sign at the entrance of the village. Its irony is that most of the people who arrive at the village cannot read; moreover, Seer could have read it but could not see it.

Frightening Jean

Matty once tried to frighten Jean with a snake. Ironically, however, the outcome was the opposite, as it turned out Jean likes garden snakes.
