McTeague.
The central character and a sociopath. His character is defined by his willingness to steal and do violence. For instance, he murders two people in the story.
Marcus.
Mac's lifelong best friend who loses his girlfriend to Mac, along with $5,000 from Trina's lottery ticket (which is a jackpot for the time). His constant conflict with McTeague leads him to a painful death in the middle of nowhere.
Trina.
Marcus's cousin whom he wished to marry. Trina marries McTeague instead before discovering she won the lottery. Trina's family moves away from the Bay, leaving Trina alone in her new marriage.
